How do I join Dark Universe?
You must get a free membership to HanginOutForums.com's forums. You can register for one in any forum allowing guest access, just look in the navbar and click Register, fill out the form, and follow the instructions. After you've completed registration, come back to the Dark Universe forum and post a character. A GM will look it over, and if approved, the player folders will be open to you. If not, the GM will contact you and let you know what needs adjusted.
How do I get a chat account?
You can get a chat account by visiting the HanginOutForums.com Hosts & Members forum and requesting one. They have a folder just for such requests. Usually, they'll have your chat account set up within 24 hours. Once it's set up, you'll be able to log into chat using your forums system nickname and password. At this time, the forums and chats are separate systems, so if you change your login information for one, it won't change it for the other. You'll have to change it.
Can I get a player chat account, with my character's name as the login?
At this time, you can request a character account at the Hosts & Members forum. After they integrate the forums and chats, which they're planning on doing, we can't guarantee your character account will still be available. It depends on how exactly the integration of the two systems effects the chat system's members controls.
What kinds of player experience are you looking for in your players?
Inexperienced, experienced, it doesn't matter. Anyone over 18 years of age is welcome to join our little rpg community and play. If you're inexperienced with futuristic rpg, but are willing to learn, there are places on the forum message boards you can ask for help, and either staff or other players will assist you. You can also ask for help in the chat rooms, using the private messaging systems. However, before you hit someone with a bunch of questions, be nice and ask first. This is the same for lurking in the chat rooms, ask those chatting first.
What is a seed post?
Seed posts are usually posted by a GM. If they're the first post of a new storyline, their purpose is to give players a place to start. If a thread stalls out, a GM may place a seed post to try and help kick-start the thread for the players.
What kinds of creatures, things, and characters aren't allowed here?
Invincible, thousands of years old, know everything, can do everything characters will be photon-cannoned and clean up with a dust buster. Think Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Space Above and Beyond, maybe even a little Farscape, Star Wars, or Star Trek, but not much. All intelligent creatures in the Dark Universe are human or humanoid based.
What kinds of characters and creatures do you allow?
Well, this is futurisic, and we're in space, so yes you can use aliens, but be reasonable with them. An invisible blob that has 40 eyes and swallows whole ships or planets is not something you'll find here. As we said, think Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Space Above and Beyond, maybe even a little Farscape, Star Wars, or Star Trek, but not much. All intelligent creatures in the Dark Universe are human or humanoid based.
I think they're cute. Why can't I use anime, hentai, etc. here?
Because the owner HATES them. They look cheesy, crappy, and this isn't a cartoon place. Seriously, if you want to play here, show some style. If you choose to try and play one here, expect it to get eviscerated on sight. I AM A MADMAN WITH A HUNGRY PET TROLL AND A BOTTLE OF HOT SAUCE! MUHAHAHA!
How technologically advanced is everything here?
Well, people do travel in space. We do have colonies on other planets, and there are space stations, space ships, etc. People do travel faster than light. There are jump drives and hyper drives, but travel is not always instantaneous, and there are no molecular transporters, etc. Virtually any traveling you do is going to take time. People still have plenty of room to grow in the technology department, and in others.
What is the difference between a GM and a DM here?
A GM, Game Master, actually watches over individual games, and may add obstacles, and other things, to help make the games more fun for players. Their contributions to the game often help the players earn rewards, and may even aid in character development. A DM, Dungeon Master, runs the main site. They see to things like site and forum maintenance.
How will my character advance and develop here?
Your character's development is pretty much in your hands. A GM may toss a little something around once in a while to make things more interesting, but your character is yours. How you interact with the universe, the people and places in it, and what situations you might find your character in will determine a great of your character's development here.
Who is rpggm, and why did they post in our thread?
This tag has been created for the sole purpose of using it on the forum message boards, and within the chat rooms, to enhance the games for the players. GMs use it to help give the GM's a common tool for their use. Think of it in the same context as a narrator. Most of the time you won't hear anything from it, but every once in a while, it'll say something cool and you'll have a little more fun because of it. It's also used to place seed posts. This tag is used in other role play gaming forums as well, so expect to see it, but don't post to it. Mostly likely, you won't get an answer.
How do I read directions and distances on one of your maps?
Any maps or star charts you might encounter will usually be in a measured grid format, with each grid block having it's own designation. There will also be a distance and directional keys somewhere on most of maps, blue prints, schematics, or star charts.
When navigating a map, how do I post character movement?
When you post, be sure to note which direction your character is facing, and how far they move in any direction. This will tell everyone where you're heading. If you're thread is being run by a GM, it might tell them what is in your way, or if you're walking into a dangerous situation. Sometimes, the GM's like to toss a little spice on things.
Example: Shane entered the cargo bay, then stood looking around, before deciding to turn right and walk straight along the wall, toward the elevator to deck 9. He'd walked about 25ft when he stopped to look around again.
If it's 50ft between the door Shane used to enter the cargo bay and the elevator, then we can look on a layout of that deck and see exactly where Shane is, and what might be around him.
Can a person get kicked out of the Dark Universe?
Yes. We run a three strikes system here. Three notable strikes and you're out! However, the application of any strikes, suspensions, or exiles, is voted on by staff. It breaks down like this...
3 strikes gets you a suspension, time depends on infraction.
3 suspensions gets you exiled.
Like most places, online and off, if you respect your fellow players and staff, and don't act like a jackass, you should be just fine. Being exiled is the absolute last resort, and reserved for only the most vile of offenders.
